What does it really mean to be healthy?

At first you might ask yourself. What does Healthy really mean? In the 21st century there seems to be so many ways people describe what being healthy is. Is it fitting into those pants you wore 20 years ago, looking good in that bikini for your trip to Hawaii? Or is it making it to the gym 5 times a week, running that mile under 9 minutes, being in overall good shape and able to resist illness? In 1947 the World Health Organization defined it as: “Health is the sate of complete physical, mental and social well-being, not just the absence of disease or infirmity.” It all really depends on who you ask in what field that Doctor, Fitness Professional, whoever. I am going to tell you what I think living a healthy lifestyle is and what factors come into play.

With living a healthy lifestyle so many things come into play, it is not just doing 30 minutes of cardio and making some good food choices during your day. Being healthy is the overall homeostasis of your body. Your body as a whole, there are so many things to name because the human body is one of the most amazing pieces of art, it is something to this day we constantly study and keep finding new discoveries. I believe you need to have an equal balance of a healthy mind and healthy fitness level. Let me take this deeper for you and explain what I mean.

Lets start off with the mind as being a major factor of living that healthy lifestyle. The mind is so powerful and is one of the things that's always growing in knowledge, your brain has no “hard drive” capacity. Your brain is the center of our body, if your brain does not work right now and help compute the black letters you see on in front of you then you would not be able to read this. When we are born we are a fresh clean slate and think of everything you have learned to this date, and you still can keep learning? I don’t know about you but that just is amazing to me. Your brain makes your muscles fire when you’re running down the street telling your legs to put one foot in front of the other. If your brain did not function properly or work at all you would not be here today. So keep that in mind when thinking of your body as a whole. Treat your brain and your body with respect and it will respect you. When you don’t it shows it and lets you know. Well lets get into the scientific facts with the brain.

Do we really only use 10% of our brain at a time? This has been a myth for longer than I can remember. What makes it weird when you get into it is that yes we do but we don’t. Well I know that really dose not make sense so let me explain. For one we can not use 100% of our brain at a time, if we did then we would not have room to take anything else in and be at maximum overload, and remember our brain is an endless piece of work, what we can do and learn is endless. Studies say that we do not use all of our brains capacity at any given time, even though some times it is more demanding than others. This just depends on how demanding the task is that we call upon for. Studies also show that at any given time about 5% of our neurons are active, but over time studies also show that a majority of the brain is active. Again depending on ones behavior and the activity the brain is being called upon to do. Here is also something to show you how large of a system our body is. It is estimated that there are 100 billion neurons in the human brain. Just so you understand how much that is lets use some simple math. Think if you tried to count to 100 billion, counting one number every second of your life non stop. Every second, minute, hour, day and so on. If you take out a calculator and add that up it will take about 3,171 years, and that’s just your neurons!

So how do we keep this power plant of ours running and healthy?
